I'm so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. We both grew up in Pines Lake and went to Schuyler-Colfax Junior High School. He was the class clown, and I was tortured by his jokes about me, but now they are funny stories. Imagine my surprise when I saw him again in the late 70's at Cody's Rooftop jazz club in Houston, Tx. I was a waitress, and he was on his way to success as an architect. I remember him fondly.

My condolences to you and your family on the passing of Paul. He was a good college friend of mine when we both attended the NJ School of Architecture at NJIT in Newark in the late 1970's. Your words defining him certainly ring true. He brought joy and laughter whenever he entered the room. A good friend who although we lost touch, will be missed. Bye Paul.

My sincere condolences to the Castell family for the loss of your brother Paul. I pray that he may be at peace, at this time. We met early on in High School, and I recall he took wrestling with strong commitment, wearing a sweatsuit under his clothes to maintain his weight class. He was a guy with great humor, and very kind heart. Am thinking of him now, with very fond memories. Most sincerely, Theresa Raducha Meyer

Plenty of happy memories during our high school years. Paul and I were often paired during wrestling practice because we were about the same weight. He usually took practice seriously, but afterwards we would often go to Sorenson’s for coffee where his entertaining sense of humor and clownish ways were outrageous fun. I remember in summer enjoying good times down at the Jersey shore with our friends too. My sincere condolences to Paul’s brother John and sisters Cathy, Laura and Connie.

Paul and I attended Pines Lake Elementary, Schuyler-Colfax Junior High and Wayne Hills High schools together. I remember him tallish and thin. He was a class clown. He tortured me a little about my last name and being flat chested when we were in junior high. By high school, we had both matured a little. Imagine my surprise when he showed up to Cody's Jazz club and bar in Houston in the 80's. He was an architect during the 80's oil boom, and I was a cocktail waitress. I hope his family is taking comfort in the memories shared.

I was lucky and blessed to have been able to know and play with the kids I grew up with in Pines Lake. It was like an extended family. I always felt especially fortunate to have known such a good family as the Castell family. Paul was like another big brother to me. He was kind, thoughtful, caring, and funny. To John, Connie, Laura, and Cathy, and your families, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you at the loss of your dear brother.

Dear John, Connie, Laura and Cathy, So sorry to hear about Paul's passing and my thoughts are with you during this sad time.
Paul was just a force of nature, untamed and with boundless energy. He had a sense of humour that would keep us laughing for hours on end and a creativity that shone through in his work. A rebel, I will never forget him setting up his drum kit outside and playing loudly to the dismay of all the neighbors. I remember asking why and his answer was "because I can" and he laughed!
Our childhood in Pines Lake is increasingly passing into the historical past. My memories of those times are still sweet in large part because Paul and all of you are in them. Sending my love to you all!

I want to send my heart felt condolences to Kathy, Laura, John, Connie and the entire family. I'm so sorry for the loss of your dear brother. Paul was my first friend. We met at age 4 and we became Pals. We rode bikes, had sword fights in the woods behind the Castell home, went trick or treating together, had sleep-overs, played on swing sets, went to each others birthday parties, and remained friends "for life" - as Paul told me just a few weeks ago. I'm so sad and sorry to learn that he is gone. I found some photos and I'll post them here.
