Obituary of Dorothy C. Vogel

Dorothy Vogel, 91 years old, daughter of the late Emma (Marino) and Archie Vogel, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 7, 2020. A graduate of Central High School, class of '47, she resided in Paterson 86 years. When Dorothy was eight years old, her father, a member of the Paterson Police Department, taught her how to fly-cast. Sponsored by the PBA, she competed in her first tournament when she was ten years old. As a fan favorite, Little Dottie made her first appearance in a national event when she was eleven. As a child she often competed against adult women in the tournaments. She continued to compete in tournaments until 1950 during which time she captured all-women's titles and a few world records. At that time, she was the only woman to win the Grand National Registered Casting Tournament Gold Star. In 1969 Dorothy was inducted into the Greater Paterson Sports Hall of Fame. Her many trophies, medals and plaques are on display at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum in Livingston Manor, New York. After her fly-casting career, Dorothy worked as a secretary for Wright's Aeronautics. Dorothy is survived by her cousin Edna (Lattanzio) Casapulla who will celebrate her life this summer.
