Obituary of Gloria S. Bernstein
Gloria (Stern) Bernstein, died Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital after a short illness. Gloria was a passionate and extremely intelligent woman. Her career was in chemistry, particularly food science. All sorts of travel and humanities were a great part of her life, especially ceramic art. Born on April 11, 1925, she grew up in Bronx, NYC graduating with honors and awards from the NYC schools. During WWII, she picked crops in NY State in a national program supporting the war effort. Gloria graduated from Hunter College with a BA in chemistry. After a brief career in the chemical industry she found her passion in the field of food science working for General Foods. She then helped in her husband Joseph's retail pharmacy and raised her family. Returning to industry, she concentrated on information science to support an R&D team and developed an information retrieval system using the nascent information highway (internet) in the 1970s and 80s. She worked for T.J. Lipton Corp. and DCA, retiring from Unilever in the early 1990s. After retirement, she and husband Dr. Joseph Bernstein continued to travel extensively and take passionate interest in their family's activities and progress.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Joseph, and her parents, Leah and Fredrick Stern. She leaves a sister Margery Stern; son Steven Bernstein and his wife Vicky; grandson Douglas Adam Bernstein and his wife Gennifer; granddaughter Jill D'Ambrosio and her husband Nick; and three great grandchildren, Logan Bernstein and Maximilian and Oliver D'Ambrosio.
