Obituary of Barbara Joan Moore

Barbara Joan (Bosland) Moore, CFSP age 78 died Thursday, July 11, 2013 in Wayne. Born in Morristown, NJ she was a Wayne resident for over 50 years. A 1952 graduate of Pompton Lakes High School, Mrs. Moore went on to attend the St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Paterson becoming a registered nurse in 1955. Working part time during her nursing studies at her Uncle Henry Bosland's ice cream store, she met and fell in love with her future husband Robert C. Moore, III a local funeral director from Paterson. After escorting her to the prom at the urging of her uncle, Bob and Barb went on to share over 50 years of marriage together until his death in 2008. When she completed her nursing studies, Barbara worked in the operating room at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains and at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson. After a career break to raise her family, she returned to nursing this time caring for patients in what is now St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital. In between her active nursing careers, she spent many years as a volunteer for the Paterson General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary organizing and running numerous events and fundraisers. Around this time, at the urging of family and friends, she also entered and won the Mrs. Passaic County Beauty Contest - a title she rarely brought up herself but one her family was very proud of. As her nursing career came to a close, Barbara decided to embrace a new challenge and obtain her license to become a funeral director and work with her husband at their family's business, Moore's Home for Funerals. She went on to attend William Paterson University in Wayne and then the Funeral Service program at Mercer County Community College (MCCC). Achieving her license in 1981, she went on to work side by side with her husband, helping the families of the greater Wayne area at the funeral home. She was a tireless advocate for women wishing to enter funeral service, a male-dominated field at that time. Mrs. Moore went on to become a member of the Passaic County Funeral Directors Association, The New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association (NJSFDA) and also the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). Embracing the Moore family philosophy of giving back to the profession they love, she began to participate in the volunteer leadership of those funeral service associations. She was the President of the NJSFDA in 1993 and was awarded their Talisman Woman of the Year award in 1998. She went on to represent the NJSFDA at the national level by becoming their Policy Board Representative to the NFDA. This prominent national position networked her with other national funeral service leaders who went on to elect her to serve as an At-large Representative on the NFDA Executive Board. Using her position on the national board, she was able to promote and advocate for funeral service and all funeral directors across the country as well as the families they served. After her board service with NFDA, she continued her volunteer activities for her profession by serving on the MCCC Funeral Service Advisory Committee and participating with the NJ Funeral Ethics Association and the National Foundation for Mortuary Care. She also was a Past President of the Paterson Area Zonta Club, Past Treasurer of the Wayne BPO Elks Ladies Auxiliary and a former choir director at the Preakness Bible Church. Her lifelong hobby of knitting and crocheting produced countless handmade sweaters and blankets for family and friends. She also contributed her handmade blankets to the Prayer Shawl Ministry group at Our Lady of Consolation RC Church in Wayne for those in need of comfort. After her retirement, she was able to nurture her love of flowers by helping her daughter at her flower shop, Blooms of Wayne. Barbara will be most remembered as a dedicated wife, mother and caring professional who continued to give of herself to the end. In addition to her beloved husband Bob, she was predeceased by her parents Robert and Grace (nee Ammerman) Bosland, her brother Robert, Jr. and her sister Beverly. Barbara is survived by her loving children Lisa Courter and her husband Ken, Robert, IV and his wife Pat, Guy, and also Dayna Montaina and her husband Guy. Barbara, Michelle, Jaclyn, Robert, V, Logan, Colby and Aaron are her devoted grandchildren. She also leaves behind her step mother Lena Bosland, her sister Priscilla Albey and her dear Aunt Hope Bosland along with many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Mass on Monday, July 15, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Consolation R.C. Church, 1779 Hamburg Tpke in Wayne. Visiting from 2-6 PM on Sunday, July 14 at Moore's Home for Funerals, 1591 Alps Rd in Wayne.
