I only have wonderful memories of my friend Cheryl.
She was immensely talented. I loved her paintings.
I enjoyed our occasional trips to the NYC ballet, which she loved.
She was always supportive and stood with me against prejudice.
I remember her long long red polished nails. They were great for back scratching.
I use to call her Cherl or CAT or sometimes Kelly for Kelly Green.
She’d call me Cid, pet names assigned by our friend Ellen.
I loved watching her childlike excitement at our Christmas Eve gift exchanges.
She would come over with bags and bags filled
with just the perfect treasures to give to her friends.
I remember she was always cold, like me. I can see her sitting with her oversized coat around her shoulders.
I loved the way she looked when she’d pull her hair back in a braided knot.
I laughed at the zingers she’d come out with every now and then,
like “feet do your duty cause my body’s in trouble”. Or my favorite, “go piss up a rope”.
I appreciated her advice. It was Cheryl who convinced me to cut loose and spend the money installing a spa by saying: “Makes sense for someone with a bad back” accompanied by a look in her eyes that said… you dummy.
She loved the Wizard of Oz and Leslie Ann Warren in Roger's and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. We went to see that too, the ballet version of course.
She was always a part of our little group from college, Ellen, Jane, Cheryl, and me, more than friends.
We were spiritually connected somehow right from the first day we met in school.
These memories of Cheryl have always been with me and you’ll always stay with me in my heart, “Cherl”

I've known Cheryl since Junior High School and I have always been privileged to have her as a sweet, funny, fiercely loyal friend. The last few days I've been thinking about all the funny, crazy things we did throughout our lives in school and as adults. From capitalist flower children, selling dip and drape flowers in high school, our mega present fests on Christmas eves, and our mutual love of old movies and musicals to name just a few. She was a dedicated teacher and I greatly admired her tenacity in trying to improve kids lives in a tough situation. I will miss her beyond words and she will always be in my prayers.

Cheryl,
I only met you a few times in person, but being your mom's friend she would often speak of you with such proudness. You were a beautiful person both externally and
internally. You had a loving heart for children and passed onto many of your students your artistic abilities. Your talents that you have passed onto these students will be carried on for many years to come. This is a beautiful gift that you have left in your memory. In my prayers,
Gilda C. Jager
