Obituary of Helga E. Vogel

Dr. Helga E. (Streitberg) Vogel, age 98, died Saturday, September 8, 2007 at home in Lawrenceville. Dr. Vogel was born November 7, 1908 in Munster, Germany, the daughter of the late Wilhelm and the late Gertrud (Leskien) Streitberg. She came to the United States in 1936 and lived in Paterson and Totowa before moving to Lawrenceville. Dr. Vogel was a graduate of the University of Leipzig in Germany. She was a family practice physician, affiliated with St. Josephs Hospital, where she received a 30 year service award before retiring in 1982. She was also presented with a Golden Merit Award for 50 years of medical practice from the Passaic County Medical Society. Dr. Vogel was an assistant clinical Professor at Seton Hall University, a former member of the Church of the Covenant, Paterson, a member of the Passaic County Medical Society, the New Jersey Medical Society and the American Medical Association. She was also a member of the Zonta Club of the Paterson area, serving as membership chair and club historian. In 1983, Dr. Vogel was recognized by the Zonta Club as "Woman of the Year". She is survived by four children and their spouses: Barbara Vogel and Theodore Graham, Jr. of Trenton, NJ: Elizabeth Vogel and Donald Carloni of San Jose, CA; Stephen Vogel and Patricia McPherson of Tucson, AZ and Peter Vogel of Thousand Oaks, CA; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Wolfgang Vogel. The graveside service was held Monday, September 10, 2007 at at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Paterson.
