Obituary of Alfred R. Hewitt
Alfred "Al" R. Hewitt, age 86, died January 2 at his home in Wayne. He was born in St. Mary's Hospital, Passaic on July 30, 1926, the son of William and Caroline "Carrie" Hewitt. Mr. Hewitt graduated from St. Mary's High School in Rutherford. At the age of 17, he proudly served our country during WWII with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater on the LST 961. He married Rose Marie Barrows on July 3, 1948 and they had 64 wonderful years together. Mr. Hewitt was employed by New Jersey Bank and later, after earning a degree in Business from FDU in Rutherford, he served as Comptroller for the old Bank of Wayne on Black Oak Ridge Road. He also worked yearly during the Christmas season for the US Postal Service in Clifton.
Mr. Hewitt was a communicant at Our Lady of Consolation and served several years a Eucharistic Minister. Alfred enjoyed collecting stamps, gardening, traveling, and painting. Among his many trips with his family were Disneyland, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Montreal, the Grand Canyon, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. One very special trip with his family was to the New York World's Fair in 1964. He taught himself to paint and favored acrylic and watercolor painting. He loved to pour over the catalogs to decide which brushes he would purchase and could spend hours on end just looking at tubes of paint.
Mr. Hewitt was an avid baseball fan, and especially loved following his New York Giants and later the San Francisco Giants. He was a Wayne Little League coach for the Pier Kooistra team, coaching his son William for several years. In 1970, he and his family followed the entire season of the Wayne Little League team all the way to Williamsport, PA, as they became World Champs.
Mr. Hewitt is survived by beloved his wife, Rose Marie; his loving children Thomas and his wife Laura (Hessell) Hewitt, Cynthia (Hewitt) and her husband Richard De Jong and William and his wife Diane (Voglis) Hewitt; his devoted grandchildren Kristin, Heather, Michael, Ben and Stephanie; and his cherished great-grandchildren Abby and Chester.
