Obituary of Joan Backman

Joan (nee Hull) Backman, age 92, passed away on September 12, 2022 surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on October 6, 1929 to John and Elizabeth Hull, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, James "Jim" D. Backman, Jr. Immigrating to the United States as a young girl, Joan grew up in West Paterson and attended Passaic Valley High School, where she was head cheerleader. Together with her loving husband Jim, they built a beautiful home in Wayne where Joan remained an active and lifelong resident. In addition to being a homemaker, Joan was an avid (and competitive!) tennis and paddle player, golfer, skier, and loved to throw dinner parties for friends and family. Joan was a very involved member of The United Methodist Church in Wayne, and would sit in the same pew every Sunday morning with her family. In retirement, Joan and Jim would winter at their home in Venice, Florida. Joan is survived by her three children, James David Backman III (Patricia), Janice Backman-Glasspool (Edwin), and Jeffrey Hull Backman (Wendy), five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
