Obituary of Ticknor Bushnell Litchfield

Dr. Ticknor Bushnell Litchfield, formerly of Suffern and Mamaroneck, NY, died on August 21, 2022 of diabetes complications at his home in Pompton Plains, NJ. He was 89 years old. Dr. Litchfield had been an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum (1967-90) and Acting Superintendent of Schools (1972-73, 83-84 and 1992) of Ramapo Central, now known as Suffern Central School District (NY). Previous employment included History Teacher at Mahwah Jr.-Sr. High School (1958-61), Research Assistant at the Teachers College of Columbia University (1961-62), Administrative Intern of Ramapo Central School District (1962-63), Assistant Principal at Dobbs Ferry (NY) High School (1962-65), and Educational Consultant and Vice-President at Educational Research Services, Inc. of White Plains, NY (1965-67). Dr. Litchfield was born on May 24, 1933 and grew up in Mamaroneck, NY where he graduated from F.E. Bellows High School in 1951. He received a B.A. in American Studies from Amherst College, an M.A. in Education from New York University and an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from Teachers College of Columbia University. Dr. Litchfield was past President of the Ramapo Valley Rotary Club and the Rockland County Assistant Superintendents for Instruction. He was also a member of the Rockland County Commission for the Bi-Centennial of the U.S. Constitution, and a Trustee of the Rockland County Historical Society. Dr. Litchfield is survived by his children Lestra Litchfield (Steve Atlas) of Cambridge, MA, Scott Litchfield (Beth Litchfield) of Harrington Park, NJ, Nancy Monahan (Edward Monahan) of Wayne, PA, his former wife Lestra McArthur Litchfield, and six grandchildren, Lestra and Emma Atlas, Evan and Will Litchfield, Caroline and Teddy Monahan. Donations can be made in his memory to a meaningful charity of your choice or The American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org). A memorial visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022 from 2-4 pm at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home in Suffern, NY.
