Obituary of Emma Spanedda
Emma Spanedda passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at the age of 96. She was the last living child of eleven children born to Guilia and Peter Veronesi of Seminole, PA on December 12, 1924. She married her childhood sweetheart and love of her life, John, in 1948 and moved to the Riverside section of Paterson, NJ where they raised their six children. Emma was an active member of Blessed Sacrament, RC church and school, and remained a loving friend to many from that community even after moving to Wayne, NJ in 1997.
Emma was a warm and kind person who loved just about everyone she knew. She never missed sending cards to her friends and family for special occasions or Christmas, and would always pick up the phone to remind people that she was thinking of them. She was no stranger to the computer and was a wiz at Spider Solitaire! When springtime rolled around, Emma was ready to cheer on her favorite baseball team…the Yankees! She also enjoyed watching Family Feud, old movies on TMC, Mother Angelica on EWTN, and of course, the Catholic Mass. She prayed for so many people every day, and had a great devotion to Our Lady and the Rosary. Emma's greatest pride and joy was always her family. She treasured every moment spent with her children, their spouses, 15 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. Family parties, meals together with family and friends, and playing endless games of "May-I" were her delight!
Her tender touch and beautiful smile will be forever missed by her loving daughters, Julia Welsh and her companion Steve Defilippo of Manchester, NJ; Jeanette and her husband Frank Scillieri of Wayne, NJ; Carol and her husband Jim Funicelli of Toms River, NJ; Elisa and her husband Guy Margolin of Hawthorne, NJ; and sons John and his wife Susan of Franklin Lakes, NJ; Peter and his wife Debra of Newtown, CT.
Emma, known affectionately by the names Grandma Emma, Nona, Mama Mia and GG, will be greatly missed by all of her adoring grandchildren Jeffrey and Tamara Welsh, Raymond Welsh, John and Jennie Welsh, Nicole Spanedda, John Anthony and Susan Spanedda, Frank and Elissa Scillieri, Diane and Rubiel Estevez, Michael and Jennifer Scillieri, Nicole Funicelli, Jim Funicelli, Anthony and Ashley Funicelli, Joseph Funicelli, Jennifer and Patrick Shirley, Michelle Spanedda, Michael Spanedda and great-grandchildren Jaqueline, Jeffrey, Kenneth and Katelyn Welsh, Christina and Gabriella Welsh, Samantha and Jackson Scillieri, Gabriel and Jacob Estevez and Claire Scillieri.
She will also be fondly remembered by her surviving brothers and sisters- in- law, and her many loved nieces and nephews
