Obituary of Doris Grace Martin

Doris Grace (McKeown) Martin, age 84, of Wayne passed away on May 6, 2018 at home being cared for by her children. Mrs. Martin was born in West Paterson the daughter of the late James and Ella (Zerull) McKeown. She was raised in the Stoney Road section of Paterson on Carlisle and Dixon Avenues and graduated from St. Bonaventure Elementary and High School where she played on the basketball team. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph's prior to her marriage on November 26, 1960 to Donald Martin at St. Bonaventure Church. She spent her life caring for her children, grandchildren, husband, parents, relatives, friends and neighbors. Mrs. Martin volunteered for many years at Immaculate Heart of Mary School cooking lunches and at the church taking care of the altar and washing and ironing the altar linens. She had the best Easter egg hunt for many years, which everyone looked forward to, for her grandchildren and grand-nephews where the eggs may not have been found until the next year. A 46-year resident of Wayne, she had a long-time flea market business with her husband and son John. Mrs. Martin is survived by her loving children Ellen Martin and her husband Pete Apruzzese, Barbara and her husband Stephen Donnelly, Don and his wife Mary Sue, and her son John; her dear sister Ruth Banks; her sister-in-law Ruth Shenton; and five grandchildren, PJ Apruzzese, Patrick and Kelly Martin and Meaghan and Erin Donnelly. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Donald, in December 2016. Visiting hours will be Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church, 580 Ratzer Rd., Wayne. Interment will follow in Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa.
