Obituary of Harriet Emily Garofano

Harriet Emily (Nutile) Garofano, age 86, of Lakewood passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017. Harriet was born the daughter of the late Harry and the late Rachel (Rota) Nutile, on July 26, 1931, and raised in Paterson, also residing in Fair Lawn and Wayne for 51 years prior to moving to Lakewood in 2010.

Harriet was a graduate of the Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her RN in 1952. She later continued her education attaining a BS in Nursing from Jersey City State College and a Master's in Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her long and dedicated career included 20 years of patient care, escalating to Nursing Administration as Assistant Director of Nursing at Paterson/Wayne General Hospital, Assistant Director of Nursing at Hackensack Medical Center, Director of Nursing at Mountainside Hospital and Assistant Director of Nursing at Preakness Hospital. Before retiring in 1994, her career included consulting in the development of a comprehensive software program for complex around the clock staffing of personnel. Harriet was a dedicated and respected nursing professional.

Harriet is survived by her loving husband of 65 years Harold; her devoted children, daughters Dona Garofano, Carol and her husband James Tapp, and Lori Garofano; and sons Gary Garofano, and Guy and his wife Linda Garofano. Harriet (Nanny) also leaves eleven adored grandchildren, Anthony and Tara Garofano, Talia Garofano, Michael Tapp, Robert Tapp, Vincent and Lauren Tapp, Andrew and Samantha Garofano, Daniel and Lauren Garofano, Marissa and Justin Christy, Allison Shadel, Joey Shadel and Meredith Daniel, and Paul Shadel; six cherished great-grandchildren, Vita, Finch, Jameson, Remy, Samuel and Jillian; a brother Samuel and wife Teresa Nutile; and many nieces and nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her sisters, Rose Guilino, Anne Viglione and Emma Schamble.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 4-8 pm at the funeral home.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the prayer service on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church, 580 Ratzer Rd, Wayne which will be celebrated by Fr. Dan Kelly.

Entombment will be at Calvary Mausoleum, Paterson.
