Betty was a good friend of my younger sister Jean McLoughlin, SSND; they went through 12 years at St. Saviour's together and enjoyed many good times. My condolences and prayers go to all of Betty's family, and particularly to Jane, who was two years ahead of me in St. Saviour's. Living on First Street, we had a some-what shorter walk to St. Saviour's than Betty and Jane did. But sometimes I'd meet Jane and Margie Sheehan walking to school. These memories prompt me to pray for all of you during this difficult time. Best regards, Peggy McLoughlin Hardiman

WORDS OF REMEMBRANCE ~ PART 1 of 5
Today we are celebrating my mother’s life. Her presence in this world was a gift to us all. Elizabeth Auwerda, better known as Betty, was the giggle you heard in the Brooklyn soda shop as she sipped on vanilla cokes. On one spectacular day, she was the piano music on stage at Carnegie Hall. At age ten, when her father died, she was her sister Ann’s sunshine, making sure that her little sister didn’t miss Christmas and all the fun that little ones should have. She was the laughter you heard as she rode on the back of a motorcycle in her teens. And, she was the splash of cool water during all her summers on Greenwood Lake.

WORDS OF REMEMBRANCE ~ PART 2 of 5
My mom was the welcoming, warm smile you needed after you came in from the rain. She was the delicious aroma in the air of the ever-present chocolate chip cookies that all my brothers and sisters now know how to bake…without a recipe. She was the creativity and the hard work invested in the best Halloween costumes ever. And, sometimes, she was the source of our childish laughter. Will we ever forget when mom said, “Well, sweep it up.”
And like most Auwerdas, Betty WAS the container store… having the perfect box or bag for anything. She was the added flair to the outfit with just the right scarf or pin. She was the hidden treasure at every yard sale…another Auwerda tradition. And she was the mobile library reading thousands of books and recycling them to friends.

WORDS OF REMEMBRANCE ~ PART 3 of 5
She was the compass that helped her navigate as best she could through many personal challenges. All the while quietly keeping her faith…having hope…moving forward. She was the beautiful flower that blossomed despite the weeds.
My Mom was that ringing phone each year that told her birthday daughter, Lisa, the first snowflake had fallen. She was the life preserver that helped Laura and I stay afloat when we welcomed our babies and needed support. Betty was the handyman’s apprentice, helping Jack fix up her place at Ramapo Road. She was a helping hand to many dear friends and the shimmer of sisterly love, sharing laughter over cups of tea with Mary, Jane, and Ann.

WORDS OF REMEMBRANCE ~ PART 4 of 5
Gram was the funny grandma who would ask you to “Do her a flavor”. She was the seasoned challenger, and sometimes the victor, when she played games with her grandchildren: Scrabble, cards, croquet, and Pokeno. And she morphed into a leprechaun EVERY St. Patrick’s Day. Aunt Betty was the friendly ear…always interested in the changing lives of her nieces and nephews.
And at age 70, Betty was the proof that you are never too old to learn something new…her watercolor paintings exemplify that. Keeping her heart sheltered and her faith quiet, Betty still had hope as her health began to fail. She was given many nicknames the last few years: Bionic Bet, Eveready Betty, and Triple B standing for Bounce Back Betty.

WORDS OF REMEMBRANCE ~ PART 5 of 5
My mom was a magnifying glass showing the important details of life…the need for perseverance through difficult days, the necessity of hope in each day…hope that our family might be closer…happier…healthier, and the strength of faith through it all.
She is forever in our hearts. God has blessed us with the tremendous gift of Betty Auwerda.

To Aunt Betty's Family,
Thinking of you during this difficult time of the loss of your mom. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your families. I came across a thoughtful poem I hope you can find comfort in. Love always Jeannie
We little know that morning God was to call her name.
In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing will be the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

There are not enough words to describe what a wonderful Mother Betty was for me. She will truly be forever in my heart. I will miss you every day mom and with each thought I say a prayer you are at peace, happy and reunited with those who have gone before you. Love you Mom. Until we meet again in the far distant future keep the reggae music going and your dancing shoes on. There's got to be a sunny beach and a steel-drum band waiting for a two joyful November babies to kick up their heels!
I want to give a special thank you to my two loving sisters, Laura Hamm and Linda Mayers who gave their all to make mom's life comfortable, safe and as happy an existence during her difficult health set backs as anyone could ask for. You are truly two angels on earth! Here's to Family!
Much Love,
Lisa Loessel

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. I am a childhood friend of Betty. We attended St Saviour Elementary and High School together. We lived a block apart in Park Slope and spent many hours together walking to school and after school. I even spent time with her in Awosting and know how much she loved it there. When I graduated from college I even shared a classroom with her mother at the Jr. High I taught at. My brothers were friends of Jack and went to Brooklyn Prep.
I am so sorry for your loss and hope the good memories of time spent with your Mom will get you through this difficult time. I will be unable to come to her funeral as I am still iced in here on Long Island. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love to my sister Betty with whom I had the last boat ride around our summer lake. I was so happy we were all together that day of reminiscing . Please take good care of Ed and yourself. We miss you so much but are glad your suffering is over and you are with The Lord. He said " ALL WILL BE WELL' for I am with you. All ways always.
