Obituary of Joan Margaret Blumish

Joan Margaret Blumish (nee: Beston) was born April 5th, 1931 and entered into Eternal Peace on March 25, 2016. Joan was born on Easter Sunday and entered Eternal Peace on Good Friday. Joan was the oldest and the last of three children. Joan was born in Summit NJ and grew up in Morristown, NJ. She lived in Wayne for 58 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley R.C. Church She was a graduate of Bayley-Ellard High School, Madison, New Jersey and St. Joseph School of Nursing, Paterson NJ. She was a Registered Nurse all her life. She worked at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, St. Joseph Hospital Paterson, Alps Manor Nursing Home Wayne, and was last employed at the North Jersey Development Center in Totowa as a Head Nurse until her retirement. When Joan was 24 years of age, she was on a boat (Easter Sunday) with her friends on the Shrewsbury River. A father and 2 children were also on the river in a homemade boat. The boat capsized and Joan looked over the side and saw a black head of hair floating down the river. Without even thinking Joan dove in and saved an 11 year girl from drowning. She received the Police Benevolent Award and was asked to appear on a game show called Welcome Travelers. Her future husband (late Paul Blumish) was stationed in Mineral Wells Texas in 1955 and was watching the show. Paul wrote a letter to her commending her on her heroic undertaking and asked if she would like to meet. After several months of writing to each other, they finally met in Morristown, NJ and started dating. They fell in love were married at the Assumption Church in Morristown on September 1st 1956. Joan and Paul were married for 59 years. Joan's hobbies included reading at least 2 newspapers a day (front to back) and multiple magazines. She enjoyed cooking and gardening as well as watching professional tennis. She would sit for hours watching matches while on the phone with her neighbor and good friend Rosalie Scudellari. Joan was a devoted Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Godmother, Grandmother, Neighbor and Friend. She would help anyone in need. Married to the late Paul Edward Blumish; Loving Mother of Christopher Paul of Highland Lakes and Paula J. Clarke and her Husband John J. Clarke of Wayne; Caring Grandmother to Chelsea Marie and Caroline Grace both residing in Wayne. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday March 30, 2016 at 10:30am at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 630 Valley Road, Wayne with interment to follow at Somerset Hills Cemetery, Basking Ridge, NJ. Visiting hours are Tuesday March 29,2016 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Seraphic Mass Association, Pittsburgh, Pa.
