Obituary of Elsie Leah Smith

Elsie Leah Smith, age 92, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017. Born December 3, 1924 in Butler, the daughter of John Spencer Smith and Emma (Coniker) Smith, Elsie was a graduate of Pompton Lakes High School. Following high school, she was employed for over 25 years by Van Ness Lumber Co in Pequannock, NJ in the accounting office. Before retirement, she also worked in accounting for a company in Willowbrook. Elsie was a faithful member of Calvary Gospel Church in Wayne and served as financial secretary for over 25 years. She and her late sister also drove the church van on Sunday morning bringing children to Sunday school. Elsie was an original member of the Pompton Falls Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary where her brother, Spence, was fire chief. At an early age she learned to play the harmonica and throughout her life she enjoyed playing for family and friends as well as taking her music to missions in Paterson. Elsie resided all her life in Wayne and remembered when the Hamburg Tpke. was a dirt road in front of her home. Her friendship and caring will be missed by her church family. Surviving family members are her niece Lois M. (Smith) Bohn of Richland, PA; great niece, Susan J. Schulz and her daughter Allyson E. Schulz of Penllyn PA; great nephew, Scott E. Bohn, his wife Denise and their children, Ashley M. Bohn and Matthew S. Bohn of Bethel PA. Elsie was predeceased by brother, James Spencer Smith and sister, Dorothy May Smith. Visiting hours will be Saturday from 10-11a.m. The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home and will be celebrated by Pastor Louis Curcio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Calvary Gospel Church, 1559 Hamburg Tpke, Wayne, NJ.
